School Age

When a school-age child has speech and/or language deficits, the child will frequently not perform at grade level. These children may avoid attending classes, show difficulty in expressing and understanding language, show poor judgment, misunderstand social cues or even have difficulty with school exams. Providing the appropriate intervention to these children will enhance their academic skills, and help them perform at grade-level. School-Age children may experience one or more of the following disorders:

  1. Speech Sound Disorders- the difficulty of producing specific sounds in a position of a word, phrase or sentence.
  2. Language Disorders- the difficulty with comprehension and expression of words. Language disorders can also contribute to reading deficits.
  3. Cognitive-Communication Disorders: Difficulty with thinking skills such as memory, perception, reasoning and judgment.
  4. Stuttering- Interruption of the flow of speech
  5. Voice Disorders- Quality of voice may include hoarseness, nasality, or volume.
